Initial Application

Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits

Any individual can apply for Social Security Disability benefits and the Social Security Administration (SSA) allows three ways to apply for disability benefits. The three main ways that you can apply for benefits is online through the ssa.gov website, by phone calling SSA's toll free number 1(800) 772-1213, or by visiting your local office and requesting an application.

The initial application is lengthy and will require information on an individual's background, medical condition, doctors and hospitals visited, employment and earnings history.

Individuals often receive assistance with preparing an initial application and an attorney can assist in preparation and completion of the initial application. Contact our attorney today if you want assistance in preparing your initial application.

After filing an initial application, the Social Security Administration will usually take 3-5 months to review the information provided in the application, request and review records received in order to make an initial decision on approval or denial of disability benefits.

The Social Security Administration receives millions of applications each year, if your initial application is denied, then you will have approximately sixty (60) days from the date of your denial to appeal for reconsideration.
