Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
SSDI or DIB(Disability Insurance Benefits) is a Social Security disability benefit that pays a monthly payment to disabled individuals who are no longer able to work due to disability. The payments are based on the earnings of the individual, or that of a spouse or parent, when worked and contributions were made to the Social Security trust fund.
When individuals are working, paying into social security, individuals will receive "disability insurance" for a time period after working to apply for and receive SSDI when proving a disability. The Social Security Administration applies work credits for each quarter of the year that an individual works to determine the disability insurance earned while working.
